Beaux-Arts (University of Balamand) has inserted video art
in its program, including théorical lessons as well as projects

From
then, these vidéos show evidence of the multiple looks
and questionings on the social, political and cultural
background of their authors.
In this festival, the Academie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts show
a selection of its students’ projects...

Ziad
ABILLAMA, « Drugs and Nature », 2’ 52’’
In this video, we don't think that the Lebanese war is a natural phenomenon.
Is the vegetable seller, next door, an expert in the
affairs of nature ? Is he afraid of an artificial paradise
? Can he distinguish a potato from a Kiwi ? |
|
Ziad
ABILLAMA, « Elna et Elissa », 4’ 38’’
A
video that puts in parallel connections with the current
Lebanese society: An opinion of a citizen, the socio-musical
perception through Elissa the singer and the socio-historical
perception through the society of the “artisanal” manufacturer:
Elna. |
|
Hiba
DAROUB, « (Dés)Attachement », 9’ 15’’
A
video that shows, in the manner of dreams and metaphors,
a situation that happens between the meeting and the
division of two people. Through icon images and he diverted
symbols, this video becomes itself, by identification,
a meeting and a division. |
|
Ali
KAYS, « Nothing matters » , 9’ 17’
Mohammad
gives up his passion for music, his sister, his two
friends Helmi and Taoufic, the faculty of architecture,
his despaired mother, and then later his first love
Marie… He leaves everything, obsessed by the idea of
him having the duty to fight in his society. |
|
Charbel
CHAMOUN, « Takassim », 4’ 55’’
In
this video we find an experimental acoustic and visual
treatment of the sociopolitical situation in Lebanon,
where the demonstration becomes a hypnotic environment
above all. |
|
Amandine
BRENAS, « Sous-pitrage », 5'
47''
Man
today tends to archive his epoch. This video is an example
of that fact. Our current state is rocking towards a
vicious circle: we repeat the dead-ends of the past.
Will the young generation be the same as their elders
? |
|
Amandine
BRENAS, « Apocalypse », 4' 56''
It’s
a video that puts in parallel a social Lebanese situation
with the narration of the film « Apocalypse Now ».
Thus it questions the relationship between reality
and fiction, the actors’ play and the social behavior. |
|
Elsa
GHOSSOUB, « 7iwar (Dialogue) », 6' 21''
Is
it possible for a couple to meet in their own
residence without seeing or hearing each other
?
Are
they aware of the path on which they’re leading
the relationship ?
Is
it a chaotic road, labyrinths, or maybe even a dead-end
? |
 |
Kinda
HASSAN, « Yet another shot », 5’ 3’’
How
many times do we have to witness the repetition
of this endless scene?
When
will disasters become real disasters?
Aren’t
there any maladjusted people out there? |
 |
Mireille
RECHMANY, « Ila el kamerat « ,
3’ 29’’
Ila
el kamerat, a video that shows the reactions that someone could
have when facing a camera. And this upon two dimensions:
the spontaneous reaction and the already prepared
reaction. Can we always notice the difference?
Can a man always control his fear?
Thus
the artist goes into an auto-therapy, or at least an
attempt to generalize a flaw from which she suffers,
and that in a political and personal frame at once. |
|
Wissam
KHATTAR, « Beirut », 4’’ 31’’
Using up the visual possibilities
of video (25 frames/second), W. Khattar seeks the limits
of the visual perception in motion of the word « Beirut »,
that becomes here a video icon for a city that has always
been questioned by the artists. |

Jean-Noel
AOUN, « emit », 4’ 38’’
Once
upon a time, a student asks the teacher: «Sir, how do
we go back in time?», and the teacher teaches him how
to 'undo'. Once upon a time, in a blue room… |
 |
Ghada
SALEM, « from Void to Void », 9’ 11’’
This video is an experimentation that speaks
through the audiovisual codes of the full and the empty
that surrounds us. It’s a parallelism between the caves
of nature and the human body, until becoming a presentation
that fuses these two substances together to create one
and only one single entity. |
 |
Mansour
EL HABRE, « Videplein », 2’ 29’’
This
video tells a dialogue between the static and the moving
images, with the presence of a text that also plays
its role in this poetic/esthetic narration. |
 |
Maria
BOU HABIB, « Dans moi il y a temps « ,
4’ 17’’
The
artist shows a point of view about the time perception,
especially about its on going run. She shot subtle situation
that reflects our worries and our attitude toward the
waiting. This waiting that does never leave us alone. |
 |
Sana
CHKEIBANE, « Foot », 1’ 41’’
This
video questions the relation between image and sound;
these two elements interact together simultaneously
while passing from a daily life figurative shape, to
a more imaginary and abstract one on the screen. |
 |
Fadi
ELIANE, « Cercle vicieux « , 3’
The searching for one’s
self is shown in this video via metaphoric images that
form a situation where a poetical environment takes place. |
 |
Imad
ABDEL SATER, « Tentation forêt »,
2’ 53’’
We
find in this video a graphical treatment that takes into
big consideration the specification of the video medium
especially its rectangular frame, and its screen savers’
elements. This is to pass a temptation crisis, a forest
that is sometimes wild, and some other times domestic… |
